My Adventure Story

The conditions could not be ignored.  Simple.  Our planned route for the expedition was deep into the highlands of Iceland's interior, however, on learning of very favorable conditions of Iceland's and Europe's largest glacier the plan changed.  OEX would try to be the first non-Iceland team to cross Iceland's toughest and largest Glacier.  The team (7 Americans and 4 Canadians) with OEX this year was well experienced with 4x4 and arctic conditions.  The team had been trained at one of OEX's training centers and the modified Land Rover Defender 110 vehicles available for the expedition were ideal.  So on May 6 2012 Bruce and Gummie (Iceland OEX guide for last 8 years and guide for Iceland Rovers) set the goal of crossing Vatnajokull.  Basic plan -  cross from the west side to the east side, do so in 3 days to make use of the perfect weather window, spend two nights at Grimsvotn mountain hut,  and drop off the glacier on Iceland's Eastern coast.

The rest is history.  The OEX team made it in near perfect timing, conditions and high spirits. After the successful crossing OEX returned to the highlands for 4 more days in Iceland unparalleled landscapes.  Feel free to examine the track, notice travel rates on the glacier, and enjoy the pictures.

Cheers,
