The Absa Cape Epic, taking place in March 2021, is an eight day physically gruelling and mentally demanding mountain bike stage race in South Africa’s Western Cape Province. The race covers approximately 700km of untamed, unspoilt scenery through some of the most beautiful regions with close to 14 000m of accumulated climbing over the distance. The Absa Cape Epic is limited to 680 teams and must be completed by both members of a two-person team. The route changes every year, attracting aspiring amateur and professional mountain bikers from around the world.
In 2018, with rider safety being paramount to the Absa Cape Epic, the organisation made the switch from GSM based tracking solutions to SPOT satellite tracking solutions as many section of the race route are out of cellular range. SPOTGen3 devices provide an S.O.S. function that allows race organisers to know where all their riders are out on the route and dispatch help effectively should an emergency occur.
