Washington State Patrol Trooper Rescued After Going On Solo Hike PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 29 June 2011 14:33

june11_trooperAfter breaking off from a group, Friday, May 13, off-duty Washington state trooper, Dan Anderson went on a solo hike in the Cascade Mountains. Before settling for the night, Anderson realized he had lost his tent somewhere along the hike. Without proper protection from the rain and snow, he was unable to withstand the freezing temperature in his sleeping bag.

Anderson pressed the SOS button on his SPOT device. GEOS notified local Washington state authorities where search and rescue was notified with his last known location coordinates.

“Having the SPOT Messenger device allowed me to send my location coordinates to rescues officials from an extremely remote and rugged wilderness. I’m grateful to the search and rescue teams and the GEOS IERCC for their efforts and expertise.”

Dan was very lucky, having spent 7 years on a ground SAR team, 5 years on an Air
SAR team and 8 with the Coast Guard SAR...he should have stayed where he
was...continuing on and leaving a shelter, source of heat and LKP (last known
position) with SPOT he could have injured himself or suffered further
hypothermia due to the activity. This story ended with a happy ending but could
have been tragic...lets look at this as a learning experience and remember to
stay where you are.

Good Stuff! Living in Wa myself this hits close to home. I took my SPOT Connect
to Rainier last weekend and had great results with the new 1.1 software updates.
Before that having to use my iPhone with my PLD was a pain, but SPOT came
through after a couple months of complaints to fixe most issues. I would say the
CONNECT is now worthy of being used as a true "life saving" device and
will be using it on my Ultra-Marathon on Mount Rainier this Summer.

I have a couple of Spots and would like to upgrade to the SPOT connect for use
in my plane etc. Do you have an upgrade plan?

All this sounds like a wonderful love story coupled with perfect technolgy but,
as I live here in the North Cascades (and own a Spot), whey after the distress
signal was sent, the rescuers could not pin point the lost hiker for rescue? It
was at least after another night that the trooper was found by rescuers on
horseback. Why the delay after the first signal/s were sent? I don't mean
weather--it seemed to be exact coordinate related.

Just bought mine. I've been backpacking solo 20 years without a problem. The guy
who had to cut his arm off convinced me or I should say convinced my wife. I've
been testing the unit in the local woods, Works Great!

As a Hunter Educator I plan to acquire SPOT to use in classes. Stories like
this are quite a teaching session on the survival part of the course> Thanks
again. Gary

I have the deepest respect for all police officers. My Father was a police
officer for 33 yrs. I'm glad you had your spot to save your life. I'm 64 yrs.
old and i have one and i believe in them completely. I'm glad you had the common
sense to have one, and you were saved. Your Friend, Michael, Phx, AZ/

Thanks so much. Greatful to Dod, SPOT and Snohomish and Chelan County Search
and Rescue for this opportunity to live. I promise to make it count for
something.
