Spring is Here! SPOT 101 Refresher Course PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 17 March 2009 10:57

With Spring just around the corner for most everyone, maybe some of you haven’t used your SPOT unit for awhile. Here’s a friendly reminder to make sure that you are using it correctly to get the best results. To see the refresher click Read More…

  • Turn your SPOT unit on and go to where there is a clear view of the sky.

  • With a quick push, press the OK button. To ensure delivery, leave your unit on for at least 20 minutes. These 20 minutes allows the unit to sync up with the satellite systems and get a GPS fix. In fact, the SPOT unit sends your messages multiple times but contacts receive only the first one that arrives. This is a redundancy so that you have increased success that all of your messages are sent. We encourage you to just leave your unit on in most usage situations. The battery life is outstanding, so you won’t have to worry about much battery drain.

  • It’s always great to log in and create a test profile so that you can test how the system works. To learn more about creating multiple message profiles, check out this week’s tech talk column.

Just got back from 5 days out in the Maze section of Canyonlands in Utah. My
SPOT worked great. The tracking worked better than I expected in the deep
canyons. And all of my OK messages got out just fine. My family and friends had
a great time following me on my trip using the shared page. This was my first
real test of SPOT. Just wanted to say how pleased I was as well how pleased my
friends and family were.

I used the SPOT in South America (Patagonia). We hiked for 3 weeks in the Winter
down there and sent back OK messages to friends and family everyday. It worked
perfect! Its great when you are in front of Fitz Roy and send a SPOT because
they get great pictures from Google Maps to see the view that we see. I also
SPOTcast when I climb Mt. Rainier so friends and family can see me go up and
down the whole route, very cool and very safe as well. The SPOT works well, best
thing I ever bought, If you value your life, its worth the money!

Using my spot more and more for backcountry adventures. It brings real piece of
mind to me and my family, and what's really cool, is the way spot has encouraged
me to develop a network of reliable friends I can call upon for help. Just
setting the help feature up has encouraged me to develop stronger friendships.

HI, I enjoyed reviewing the SAT. PHOTOS of my flight last summer from Montana
back to Alaska in the MONTANA COYOTE home build. I just love the SPOT and I use
it before and after take off and along my route and then when Iam landing at a
airport. I recomend that every pilot should have one. Francis Soltis

Often to fish hunt camp I`m solo so it`s so good to have a method of contact.
