The DeLorme Earthmate PN-60w with SPOT Satellite Communicator was chosen as one of The Top 10 Breakthrough Products of 2010 by Popular Mechanics. We are honored to have been recognized by such a prestigious publication and award. Popular Mechanics editors described the PN-60w with SPOT Satellite Communicator as “a valuable tool on any trip that extends well outside of cell phone range. It not only provides detailed topographical maps and GPS guidance in the backcountry, it also lets explorers send SOS messages with embedded coordinates via satellite if they're in trouble — or Facebook updates if they're not.”
The twice-annual Outdoor Retailer trade show is an exhibition of the best outdoors equipment in the world. New in 2010, GearJunkie.com launched an inaugural “Best in Show” award for the Summer Market trade show, held in early August. From featherweight tents to portable power generators, these items exemplify innovation and new thinking in the world outdoors. SPOT received the award for the DeLorme Earthmate PN-60w with SPOT Satellite Communicator.
“After four days in Salt Lake City at the show — and some early product tests — we’ve picked a list of to-be-released innovative products you’ll see on the market,” said Stephen Regenold, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of GearJunkie.com. “The PN-60w with SPOT combo provides first-of-its-kind GPS and satellite messaging features indeed worthy of recognition.”

Dale, a retired community college administrator and instructor, is an avid hiker, backpacker and cyclist. At the age of 67, he now spends most of his free time hiking through the backcountry of Oregon and California alone and with fellow backpackers.
Like many hikers, Dale often worried about connectivity during his travels. This is why SPOT peaked his interest when reading one of his favorite magazines. Soon after, Dale visited REI to purchase his first SPOT device. In celebration of Memorial Day, Dale and 7 other hikers ranging from ages 51 to 74 decided to take a five day trip to Mattole Beach Campground near Petrolia, California. This time, he made sure to add his new SPOT Gen 3™ as a "must bring" item.
