Duane and Keith are an active and experienced father-son climbing duo. Safety is always a priority, which is why Keith decided to purchase a SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger™ to take on their outdoor adventures.

On one such adventure, father and son were climbing Handies Peak in Colorado when the pair's day took a life-threatening turn. Duane began to experience severe chest pains and could not continue. At almost 14 thousand feet, storm clouds gathering and spotty cellular coverage, Keith pressed the SOS button on his SPOT device.

GEOS International Emergency Response Coordination Center (IERCC) was alerted and within an hour, a helicopter arrived at the scene with medical personnel. Rescue efforts were soon under way and Duane was on a stretcher just before the snow, sleet and rain began to fall. A half-hour after liftoff, Duane was in the operating room receiving treatment for a heart attack and blood clots.

Almost as important as the rescue efforts was the assurance GEOS IERCC provided to loved ones back home. A GEOS IERCC operator made contact with Keith's wife and kept her updated on the rescue's progress and Duane's status throughout the the entire ordeal. This extra effort proved to be great comfort to everyone.

Keith was amazed by the whole experience: the efficiency of the SPOT device, the skillfulness of the rescue team and the responsiveness of GEOS IERCC. "SPOT was crucial in saving my father's life," says Keith.

Today, Duane is doing well and is expected to make a full recovery.
